Live A Waste Free Project.

A common problem among urban towns is lack of appropriate mechanisms to manage solid waste. Rapid urbanization, poverty and inadequate management capacity at the town council level have lowered the ability of the town council to provide basic collection and disposal services of waste, resulting into various social and environmental ills in the society. Rapid urbanization and population growth in the town has resulted into more waste collection and unmanaged waste disposal problem in the area. Solid waste management by installing smart dustbins is a long term vision in which the people of the society at first will be made aware about, the wastes, its types and then dustbins as per the category of waste will be placed in different schools and streets of Buhoma town council. Managing solid waste is one of the major challenges of urbanization. Although town councils are wholly responsible for the collection, transport, treatment, and final disposal of solid waste. Only few have basic data on waste generation and composition. Almost all lack finance and management capabilities to be both effective and efficient in this area.
The average composition of solid wastes are, organic waste 56%, plastics 16%, paper and paper products 16%, glass 3%, metals 2%, textiles 2%, rubber and leather 1%, and others 4 %.( ADB, 2013). The Government of Uganda has also enacted the on Solid Waste Management. The objectives of the act include maintaining a clean and healthy environment by minimizing the adverse effects of solid waste on public health and the environment.

Live Waste Free Project has the following objectives;
1) To create the awareness in public about proper waste management.
2) To create a source bin or commonly called as waste for dustbin.
3) To coordinate and evaluate progress through regular monitoring and evaluation process.
4) To cooperate with local government for sustainable plans in waste management.
5) To involve other institutions and individuals, both national and foreign, who are willing to cooperate with Live Waste Free Project.
